Essential oils are a great tool to have not only during pregnancy but while giving birth as well.
There is a significant difference in the types of oils, brands, companies, dilution, and sources. It is important to not ingest an essential oil unless the oil is specifically formulated and certified for this purpose. I prefer to use doTERRA oils due to their rigorous testing, high quality, and effectiveness. Some of these oils are certified for internal use, however I would not recommend using them internally if you are pregnant as there have been no specific studies on the effect of essential oils on an unborn child. If you use a general store brand it is important to find out if they need to be diluted prior to be applied topically (directly on the skin) to prevent any rashes or irritation.
The best ways to use the oils during birth is to use a diffuser for either the whole room or on a necklace and as a massage oil. You can always mix the oil with another vegetable oil and dip a cotton ball or Kleenex to keep close to you to smell or under your pillow so the other people in the room are not affected.
Massage oils with Geranium or Rose in a base of olive oil works great for the back and perineum.
Lavender is a great oil to diffuse in the room or massage on the feet to increase circulation and provide a slight analgesic effect.
Clary Sage is another popular oil but should not be confused with sage. Clary sage is much more gentle and mild and will not distress the baby. Many women report that diffusing this oil in the room is the best way to have the best results from the oil.
Balance, from doTERRA oils, is great oil combination of spruce, rosewood, frankincense, and blue tansy with fractionated coconut oil. This oil brings a sense of calmness and is best applied to the feet, but can also be used with reflex points on the wrists and back.
There are so many different types of oils and if you choose to use some for your birth it is important to make sure you like the aroma and you find the scent and effect comforting. Get some oil samples and try them out either with diffusing in your home or by rubbing them on your feet! These oils are also great for alleviating post partum adjustment disorders and other symptoms.
Personally, I ordered the family physician kit (Includes 5 ml bottles of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue®, Breathe, DigestZen®, and On Guard™) and the Introductory Kit (5 ml bottle of dōTERRA’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint essential oils) as testers to see what worked with my body (and patient’s) the best. I found some smells were amazing and calming and other’s were not. However, I blame my picky pregnancy nose for that issue!
